Vitalik’s tweet basically means that in the future, Ethereum won’t just have a single dynamic account state. It’s considering adopting both UTXO-style states + dynamic states, as well as various forms in between. The Bitcoin community (especially those working on Utreexo) explored a clever idea before: The goal was to figure out how nodes can securely verify transactions without having to store so much historical junk data. Ethereum’s current scaling roadmap draws inspiration from and expands on this direction, aiming to combine the advantages of different state styles. In simple terms: UTXO-style state: More like Bitcoin’s approach, where the state is relatively clean/easy to compress and verify. It’s suitable for resources that don’t need to be occupied long-term after being used or expiring. Dynamic state: This is Ethereum’s current account model—flexible and capable of storing complex data, making it ideal for smart contracts that require ongoing interaction and modification. The protocol will support a flexible design. Most everyday activities, like simple transfers, token issuance, basic NFT transfers, and some DeFi operations, can follow a lightweight/highly scalable state path. This enables hyperscale expansion while minimizing sacrifices to decentralization, allowing regular users to run nodes without their hard drives and memory exploding under pressure. For other activities, like complex/long-term/highly variable states—such as core contracts like Uniswap or on-chain order books—they’ll continue using the current dynamic state. To sum up: Simple tasks will use lightweight states to scale aggressively, while complex tasks will stick to the flexible dynamic state. The goal is to merge the strengths of both state styles.
