The Ethereum community has released a draft EIP for the CALLSTATUS instruction. This instruction can return the completion status of the most recent call or creation operation in the current frame, distinguishing between success, rollback, abnormal termination, and lower-level termination in three-bit binary form. This proposal allows contracts to differentiate between intentional rollback and abnormal termination such as gas exhaustion after a call failure, preventing senders from faking failure results through gas manipulation, and adapting to future changes in state creation metrics.
