The VIX volatility index for US stocks surged more than 47%, and all three major US stock indexes fell.

The S&P 500 Volatility Index (VIX) closed at 24.44 points, up 47.14%, reaching its highest level since April 7. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.50%, the S&P 500 fell 2.65%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 4.25%.
