Vitalik Buterin: Slowing down the hyperscale expansion of computing power is generally more beneficial than harmful.

--

Vitalik Buterin posted on the X platform that he disagrees with the recent negative reactions to the anti-data center movement and believes that slowing down the hyperscale expansion of computing power is generally more beneficial than harmful. Vitalik Buterin points out that with advancements in algorithms, AI capabilities that would have relied on larger-scale data centers in the next two years could be achieved through existing data centers in about four years or even less, and the anti-data center movement may not necessarily have catastrophic consequences. The world needs more time to address cybersecurity threats and risks to biosecurity. Scientific research is constrained by factors other than AI; a one-year slowdown in AI development would actually delay scientific progress by less than a year, and this assessment does not rely on AI doomsday theories.
