According to Foresight News, the US Department of Justice has announced that it has seized Popeyetools, a cybercrime marketplace, and sued its administrators Abdul Ghaffar, Abdul Sami, and Javed Mirza. Nicole M. Argentieri, Director of the Criminal Division and Chief Deputy Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice, stated, "As charged, the three individuals founded and operated a long-term online marketplace, selling illegal goods and services for the purpose of committing cybercrime, including ransomware attacks and financial fraud. Today, we announce the closure of the PopeyeTools domain, criminal charges against its operator, and seizure of cryptocurrency." If convicted, the defendants can be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on each charge.
