According to Bloomberg, US prosecutors have accused 19-year-old Remington Ogletree of using the resources of the Scattered Spider hacker group to infiltrate two telecommunications companies and a US financial institution, steal data, and defraud millions of users of cryptocurrency through phishing links, resulting in a total loss of $4 million.
Ogletree is suspected of abusing telecommunications system privileges by sending 8.5 million phishing messages in the name of counterfeit cryptocurrency exchanges and gaming companies, inducing users to leak sensitive information. In addition, he also deceived 12 employees to obtain access to a financial institution's account and stole customer financial information. Scattered Spider has previously been accused of carrying out cyber attacks against companies such as MGM Resorts and Coinbase.
