[Blockstream Researchers Propose Hash-Based Signature Scheme to Counter Quantum Threats] Blockstream researchers Mikhail Kudinov and Jonas Nick proposed in a revised paper published on December 5 that hash-based signature technology could be the key solution to protect the $1.8 trillion Bitcoin blockchain from threats posed by quantum computers. The security of this scheme relies on hash function assumptions similar to Bitcoin's design and has undergone extensive cryptanalysis during the post-quantum standardization process by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Older Pay-To-Public-Key Bitcoin wallets created before 2012, which contain approximately $600 billion worth of Bitcoin (including $98 billion held by Satoshi Nakamoto), will be the first to face threats from quantum computers.
