[Tether Confirms Termination of Operations in Uruguay and Layoffs of Most Employees]
Tether Holdings Ltd. has confirmed to Uruguay's Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) that it will cease its operations in Uruguay and lay off 30 of its 38 employees. Tether had previously planned to invest $500 million in Uruguay, including the construction of three data processing centers in the departments of Florida and Tacuarembó, with an estimated power demand of 165 megawatts, as well as the development of a wind and solar power park with an installed capacity of 300 megawatts. To date, over $100 million has been invested, with an additional $50 million allocated for infrastructure development. These facilities will be owned by Uruguay's state power company (UTE) and the National Interconnected System. Tether stated that the 31.5 kV transmission contract model and associated costs in Florida have raised operational expenses, making the project economically unfeasible under current conditions.
