[California Man Sentenced to 70 Months in Prison for Cryptocurrency Theft and Money Laundering] According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Evan Tangeman, a 22-year-old man from Newport Beach, California, was sentenced to 70 months in prison and 3 years of supervised release by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on April 24. Tangeman was involved in an interstate social engineering crime syndicate, assisting in laundering at least $3.5 million. The syndicate has been operating since October 2023, stealing over $263 million in cryptocurrency through hacking and other means. Most members of the group are unemployed youths under the age of 20 or minors. Tangeman was responsible for converting stolen cryptocurrency into fiat currency and renting luxury homes for the group members, receiving luxury cars as compensation. After the crime, he also instructed accomplices to destroy evidence. The case was jointly investigated by the FBI and IRS, and so far, 9 individuals involved have pleaded guilty.
