Katayama Gaoyue: Collaborating with the US Treasury Secretary on Foreign Exchange Policy

--

According to Japanese Finance Minister Takayuki Katayama, after her meeting with US Treasury Secretary Bessent in Tokyo, the two teams are smoothly cooperating in the field of foreign exchange policy. Katayama did not comment on Besent's specific remarks. The market is paying attention to this meeting as it is less than two weeks away from the suspected large-scale yen intervention by Tokyo authorities. Besent has hinted at opposing direct market intervention and preferring to support the yen through the Bank of Japan tightening monetary policy. Analysis suggests that Japanese authorities may intervene for the first time on April 30th, using approximately $24.7 billion in funds, with an additional $30 billion to follow up. Katayama also revealed that the two sides discussed topics such as artificial intelligence and key minerals.
