Coinbase releases May 2026 Service Interruption Review Report
Coinbase has released a report stating that on May 7, 2026, a service interruption of approximately 8 hours was caused by a malfunction of the AWS us-east-1 region use1-az4 refrigeration unit, with a complete recovery time of approximately 12 hours. The trading matching engine has lost its quorum due to a single data center architecture and needs to be restored to operation through code adjustments and new node groups. The AWS hosted Kafka service control plane failure further amplifies its impact. Coinbase will upgrade its cross regional hot standby architecture, migrate Kafka to a three zone deployment, and work with AWS to implement improvement measures.
