Cambodia launches mediation process for maritime disputes with Thailand

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Ma Nai stated that he has officially sent letters to the Thai government and the United Nations Secretariat to initiate mandatory mediation procedures in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to resolve the issue of overlapping maritime areas. Thai Prime Minister's Office spokesperson Rachada said that the cabinet had decided on May 5th to abolish the maritime overlapping memorandum signed with Cambodia in 2001 and switch to the UNCLOS mechanism to safeguard national interests.
