Multiple regions in the United States restrict the construction of AI data centers, hindering OpenAI's Stargate project
Starting from 2023, state and local governments in the United States have implemented over 300 restrictions or bans on data centers, with over 275 of them introduced in 2026. The town of Sarin, Michigan, once voted to block changes to OpenAI and Oracle's Stargate project plans. After winning the lawsuit, the Stargate team broke ground on June 1, 2026. Although the project received a $250 million investment tax exemption, more than 20 towns within 50 miles of it passed the ban. A poll shows that 70% of American adults oppose the construction of AI data centers. Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez proposed a federal ban, and Humans First organized protests. More than ten places including New Jersey have introduced permanent bans, and the New York State Legislature has passed a one-year ban bill waiting for Kathy Hochul to sign. Ohio, Illinois, and Arizona will suspend tax benefits in 2026.
