[Micron Launches $9 Billion Chip Expansion Project in Japan] According to Bloomberg, Micron Technology held a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday for its factory expansion project in Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The total investment for this expansion is approximately 1.5 trillion yen, equivalent to $9.3 billion, with the production line focused on mass-producing advanced High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) storage chips tailored for AI computing scenarios. Plans indicate that the new production line could begin chip shipments as early as the summer of 2028. To support the domestic semiconductor industry and enhance the chip supply chain, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is providing up to 500 billion yen in financial subsidies for this project. This large-scale expansion is seen as a critical move for Japan to strengthen its position in the global AI chip competition and bolster its domestic advanced storage manufacturing capabilities.
