The Crypto Council for Innovation and Blockchain Association have filed a lawsuit against Illinois officials, opposing the state's expected 0.2% cryptocurrency tax to be implemented in January 2027. The two organizations filed a petition in the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court of Sangamon County, claiming that the tax violated the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of Illinois, federal and state due process laws and the Internet Tax Freedom Act, and caused double taxation. The lawsuit claims that the tax regulations are vague, putting residents and brokers at risk of civil and criminal penalties. Blockchain Association CEO Summer Mersinger stated that Illinois cannot implement a tax system that discriminates against digital commerce and increases consumer and business uncertainty. Digital Chamber filed a similar lawsuit in July regarding the same tax.
