On August 1st, OpenAI announced that it had banned a batch of ChatGPT accounts associated with Cambodian fraud networks. The network uses ChatGPT to create false identities, translate fraudulent information, and create promotional content, inducing victims to participate in false cryptocurrency or gold investment projects. The relevant clues were provided by WhatsApp, and the individuals involved were operating in the Bobe area of Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia. OpenAI has shared relevant information with industry partners, but the specific losses caused by the network are still unclear, with some victims losing thousands of dollars.
