Within four years, two key figures have gone missing—what exactly happened to this European crypto exchange? According to *The New York Times*, Sylwester Suszek, the founder of the Polish crypto exchange Zondacrypto, disappeared in 2022 and has been missing ever since. His family suspects he may have been murdered. This April, his successor, CEO Przemyslaw Kral, also suddenly vanished. Previously, Kral had assured customers that the exchange held over $330 million worth of Bitcoin and that users would eventually be able to withdraw their funds. It seems these Bitcoins were stored in a wallet that hasn’t been active for nearly a decade, and the private keys to unlock it were reportedly only known by the missing former leader. Zondacrypto subsequently halted withdrawals, shut down its website, and saw the price of its ZND token plummet by over 99.9%. In June, its Estonian parent company’s license was revoked. The exchange was originally founded as BitBay in Poland in 2014 but later moved its registration to Estonia. Estonia’s Financial Intelligence Unit had previously flagged numerous local crypto companies for failing to submit suspicious transaction reports, with Zondacrypto listed among them. Polish prosecutors are currently investigating the exchange’s establishment and operations but have yet to confirm whether any criminal activity was involved. The case has also brought allegations of kidnapping, money laundering, organized crime, and political ties into the spotlight. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Zondacrypto of connections to Russian intelligence agencies, organized crime, and far-right political figures, though these claims await further investigation. One founder going missing could be a personal safety issue. But four years later, when their successor also disappears and hundreds of thousands of customers are unable to withdraw funds, this is no longer just a case of business failure. The questions Zondacrypto leaves behind are: Does the platform actually have sufficient assets? Who holds the private keys? And where did the two key figures go?
