According to The New York Times, Oman has submitted a proposal to the United States and Western allies to jointly charge passage service fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz with Iran. Regional diplomats stated that the fees are intended to be paid voluntarily, while Iran stated that payment is mandatory. The United States has received the proposal and expressed doubts. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US opposes any charges for navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in the form of fees, tolls, or donations. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran will initiate negotiations with Oman in the near future to discuss fee mechanisms and route adjustments.
