[South African Treasury and South African Reserve Bank Release Draft Guidelines on Cross-Border Crypto Asset Activities for Public Consultation] On August 3, 2026, the South African National Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank jointly released the 'Draft Guidelines on Cross-Border Crypto Asset Activities' for public consultation, with the deadline for feedback set for September 30, 2026. The guidelines specify that when crypto assets are transferred between domestically authorized CASPs and foreign CASPs, or from domestically authorized CASPs to non-custodial wallets, such transactions must be reported to the Financial Surveillance Department (FinSurv). At this stage, only individuals are permitted to conduct cross-border crypto asset transactions within the prescribed limits through authorized CASPs, while South African entities are not yet allowed to engage in related cross-border activities. The guidelines do not differentiate between types of crypto assets, nor do they classify crypto assets as official currency in South Africa.
