Barclays Warns AI Infrastructure Expansion May Pose Political Risks to Related Trades
According to a report by Jinse Finance on August 26, the Barclays strategy team stated that the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is triggering backlash among bipartisan voters in the U.S., potentially introducing political risks to the currently popular AI trades. Barclays noted, "The construction of data centers is transforming AI from an abstract tech narrative into a tangible issue of living costs." Even voters with limited exposure to AI are being affected by higher electricity bills, water resource pressures, and the construction of industrial facilities in their communities. Evercore ISI and BCA Research have also warned that the surge in energy-intensive data center construction is becoming a sensitive topic for the midterm elections, as voters grow increasingly dissatisfied with rising electricity costs. Barclays believes that regardless of the midterm election outcomes, AI trades lack new catalysts for further growth and cautions investors against assuming that "rapid AI adoption and a favorable political environment can coexist in the long term." Barclays' AI Data Center Index, which includes over 40 companies such as AMD, Arista Networks, and Microsoft, may face policy-related pressures on their stocks.
