“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.” - John Milton John Milton (1608–1674) was an English poet, intellectual, and political writer who became one of the most celebrated figures in English literature. Throughout his life, he defended ideas such as freedom of expression, religious liberty, and the right to publish without censorship. Living through the turbulent years of the English Civil War, Milton became deeply involved in the political and religious controversies of his era. Although he eventually lost his eyesight completely, he continued producing important works by dictating his writing to others. Even after the Restoration brought major political changes and personal difficulties, Milton remained devoted to many of his principles. Milton is best remembered for Paradise Lost, an epic poem that became a landmark of English literature. His other influential works, including Paradise Regained and Areopagitica, further established his legacy in poetry and political thought while contributing to enduring debates surrounding intellectual freedom and freedom of the press.
