Meta and Microsoft lead the way, with data center leasing commitments exceeding $850 billion

--

According to Bloomberg, Meta Platforms Inc. and Microsoft have each committed tens of billions of dollars in additional data center leasing expenses in their recent fiscal quarter, driving the total data center leasing commitments of large cloud computing companies to exceed $850 billion in the future. Regulatory documents show that tech giants are competing to expand their server clusters, with rental commitments increasing over the past year. These future lease costs are added to existing contracts and will not be reflected on the company's balance sheet until actual payments are made. Lease commitments typically target data centers and may also cover office or warehouse facilities. Some lease contracts contain specific clauses that allow the company to terminate future performance obligations when conditions are met.
