US President Trump has imposed new tariffs on Canadian exports under Section 338 of the 1930 US Tariff Act, which will take effect on August 19th. The administrative announcement states that Canada has put American businesses at a disadvantage by banning the import of American alcoholic products, restricting the export of American dairy products, and some American cars. Simon Lester, a researcher at Rice University, said that it will be quite difficult to successfully challenge in US courts. Nicolas Lamp, an associate professor of international law at Queen's University, believes that these tariffs are a negotiation strategy to weaken Canada's bargaining chip.
