Cryptocurrency remittance of 35.4 million US dollars in El Salvador in the first half of the year, accounting for 0.7%
According to data from the Central Bank of El Salvador, El Salvador received over $5 billion in overseas remittances in the first half of 2026, of which $35.4 million was settled through cryptocurrency channels, accounting for 0.7% of the overall remittance scale. In the same period of 2025, cryptocurrency remittances amounted to 25.4 million US dollars, an increase of 39.1%. Banks and traditional remittance companies hold over 84% of the market share. El Salvador passed the Bitcoin Act in 2021, making Bitcoin a legal tender. The government supported Chivo wallet is gradually ceasing operations under a credit agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
